How to Use Rider Switch

When it comes to catering to families, Disney does it top notch all the way! Although the majority of the rides at Disney World do not have a height requirement, some of them in fact do. Realizing that many families travel with kids with a wide age range, there is a system in place just for this, called Rider Switch. If used effectively, you could essentially increase the number of attractions that you can ride using the fastpass entrance!

First, your PPDD Travel Planner will already know the height of all your children when planning your itinerary with fastpasses. If you really want to ride an attraction, but not everyone in your family meets the height requirement, this is an example of how you will work it.

Let’s say you are a family of Mom, Dad, 6 year old and 3 year old. Your 6 year old can’t wait to ride The Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train, BUT…you already know your 3 year old is not going to be tall enough. Your PPDD travel planner gets a fastpass for Mom and 6 year old to ride Mine Train at the same time Dad and 3 year old has a fastpass for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. ALL FOUR of you MUST show up at the Mine Train ride together, and tell the cast member you need a Rider Switch ticket. Then, mom and 6 year old proceed through the fastpass line to ride Mine Train, while Dad and 3 year old walk just down the walkway to ride Winnie the Pooh at the same time. The Rider Switch ticket will allow up to 3 people total to ride again using the fastpass line! This means that the 6 year old gets to ride a second time with Dad if he wants.

STEPS: (summary of above)

Step 1 – All family members show up to the entrance of the attraction to request Rider Switch ticket

Step 2 – First group rides attraction, while others wait (or others may have a fastpass for something close by!)

Step 3 – Up to 3 people may return right away OR at a later time (prior to expiration of ticket) to use the Rider Switch ticket. These 3 people may all be new riders, or could be same previous riders as this is not something that is checked at the attractions.

TIP: If you have a large group, the rider switch really comes in handy since 3 people can ride off 1 ticket.

TIP: The old Rider Switch tickets used to expire on the same day they were handed out, so they had to be used right away. The NEW Rider Switch tickets have a monthly expiration! So if you are handed the ticket on March 23rd, the ticket will say it expires on March 31st, meaning you have until the end of your trip to use it! Of course, if you are handed the ticket on the last day of the month, you must use it that day!

TIP: You do NOT have to have a fastpass for an attraction in order to use Rider Switch. The first group that goes on could opt to wait in the Standy By line (regular line) and the second group that rides can use the fastpass line any ways.

TIP: If your child is tall enough for the attraction, but is too scared to ride it, you can still get a Rider Switch ticket.
